A Look At The Authors:
We are three sisters, Klytie, Ivory and Lavender, the authors of Horizontal View.The inspiration for making this zine came to us while we were eating a Döner Kebap at the City Grill. Our dad told Ivory that she'd make a good news reporter and that Klytie would make a good journalist. (he didn't say anything to Lavender because she's too little to be thinking about jobs, but we're not gonna leave her out!)

The idea of making a magazine or newsletter had always sounded like fun, but it wasn't until dad made those comments that we actually decided to take the time and make one.We'll be putting in all the little things we happen to write about like short stories, poems, news stories that mean something to us, plus some fun little tidbits like book and movie reviews and just going crazy!

Our Constitution, Our Presidents and Our God

Can it be that John Adams did not know what he was talking about when he said, "Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."How about when James Madison wrote the Constitution, did he not mean what he wrote?

Of course he did!

So, how can it be that the president and the judicial branch and many other people are trying to change the Constitution? James Madison told us about two hundred years ago that “If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land; it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy."

What are we doing now? Fighting a foreign country. We are at war despite the fact that the Constitution tells us that we may meddle in the affairs of other countries and we must not declare war on a country unless said country attacks us first.

Something strange is going on… Our current president said himself "If this were a dictatorship, it'd be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I'm the dictator." Our first president did something that Bush should try to remember. George Washington would not accept power, he became a president who adhered to the idea of checks and balances so not one president, not even the president, could have more power in the government than the next person.

God has given us morals to live by; these same morals were put into the Constitution and, therefore, this country by the Founding Fathers. Church and state should in no way be connected to the government, but God should in no way be excluded from the government. Without the freedoms and morals endowed by the Creator, the government would be able to change the standards to whatever they want, then there would be no structure, no Democracy and no United States of America!

We need another president like George Washington, one who will uphold the laws and moral standards of the Constitution and our country. We need a president who will make sure that we can be proud to call ourselves Americans!

A Holiday in Scotland
Klytie's Memory

Spit rain splashed against the car window as we drove down the wrong side of the road. Trees littered the green, hilly landscape and the sky was overcast as usual. We were in England traveling to Scotland on what the Brits would call a “holiday”.

The twisting roads put a burning lump in my throat; if the car didn’t quit turning and going up and down I would surely throw up.We entered a very woody area and continued on and on across the slick black road squishing a few frogs as we went. Soon, we came to a country region where people had little farms scattered about. It was then that we saw the cows.

Since we were so little at the time, it seemed like there were millions of cow grazing in the field. Even now I have the vision of a thousand cows scattered over the landscape.Caving into our excited screams and pleas, my dad stopped the car along a fence and let us out to say hello to the cattle. He just so happened to park next to a cow who just wouldn’t tolerate bystanders.

My sister and I watched wide-eyed as the cow stood haughtily with its back side toward us. I come to the conclusion of my story as my sister exclaimed, “Whoa!! That’s a big butt!”

Lavender's Prayer

Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Gulf coast destroying many homes, and two of those homes were owned by my family members; one my aunt and uncle and the other by my great-grandmother. For a few months the power was out, and the tremendous amount of wind blew a tree over on top of my great-grandmother’s bedroom roof. So my aunt and grandma brought her up to visit us in South Carolina while her roof was being fixed.We went to Beaufort, S.C., and visited Granny’s old childhood home. After a tiring day of touring in Beaufort and a very long drive home we all relaxed on the couch. Lavender asked my Aunt Beth to read her a bedtime story since we rarely got to see them at our house. The rest of us sat on the couch waiting for Lavender to be tucked away in bed so we could watch a movie. My Aunt came back and my mom went to give Lavender a kiss and have her pray.

As my Aunt sat down, she said “Lavender’s so cute, I bet she is dreaming of pink clouds and ponies” At that moment my mom came laughing down the hallway, “Guess what she just prayed for! She said ‘Dear God, I pray that I can have Fire to shoot out of my hands so I can destroy the town so I can be the hero and save the people.’” We all laughed “She's not dreaming about ponies and pink clouds,” my mom continued, “she’s dreaming about her fire hands from God!”

Boogers and Beans
Mom’s Memory

It was a hot summer day in Arkansas. All of our friends were gathered at our house for some event long forgotten. It was probably Super bowl Sunday…but, that’s not important. What’s important is a little red bag of jelly beans.

Klytie was about seven and Ivory was about four years old when we bought the bag of beans. Everyone , except the men who were either outside grilling or glued to the TV, huddled around to grab a jelly bean and read the little book of flavors. However, you must know that this was not an ordinary bag of jelly beans. No, this one was special and full of unpleasant surprises. Have you guessed what kind they are? Bertie Bots Every Flavor Beans. Back when Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone movie first came out, the stores were stocked full of them.

While the hot sun and cool breezed poured through the open windows and doors we all gathered in the kitchen. Everyone was looking for the grossest flavor they could find; there was grass, dirt, earwax, horse radish, and the one we dubbed as the nastiest, booger. Finally, we found it, the booger flavored jelly bean. Mom’s friend, Bridget, was the one who found it, so it was anonymous that she should eat it.

It was then that Ivory came in the kitchen, she climbed onto the counter and searched though the little bag. Someone asked what she was looking for and she replied, “A booger one!” They told her that Ms. Bridget had already eaten it and poor Ivory cried out in anguish. “Why did you want it anyway?” Bridget asked, “It was disgusting!” No,” Ivory explained, “I like boogers!”

Movie Review: National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets

Finally, after long anticipation, the sequel to National Treasure is out! The entire cast is back; Nicolas Cage (Benjamin Gates), Diane Kruger (Abigail Chase), Jon Voight (Patrick Gates) and Justin Bartha (Riley Poole). Ben Gates embarks on a quest to clear his ancestor, Thomas Gates’, name. During his journey through history to find the truth, Ben and Riley travel to Europe and meet surprising characters. Not to mention he’s stumbled on another treasure hunt. Also, the suspense from the first movie comes back when Mitch Wilkinson seems to be searching for the same treasure.

Despite the exciting plot and hilarious comedy, mostly courtesy of Riley Poole, Book of Secrets is very copy cat. Not only is almost exactly like the prequel, but it’s also like Indiana Jones in some scenes. (But those scenes were pretty cool!) I understand how they needed to add something different to keep it from being the same as the first one, so the copy cattiness did not bother me

In the trailers, they made a big deal of London and France, but very little of the movie was actually spent there. In the first movie, they showed fun little details on how Ben carried out his “evil” plans, this movie lacked those details. They instead paid more attention on Ben and Abigail’s relationship and Ben’s mom and dad.

Still, it was a very fun movie to go see, don’t miss out on it!

Saint Valentine

Saint Valentine is well-known for marrying young men against the law of Claudius II who seemed to think that men without wives made better soldiers. However, there were many “Saint Valentines” Perhaps they were many different men who did the same type of things or maybe they were many men named Valentine and their stories sort of mingled together over time. We may never know Valentine’s true origin. But, we do know that Saint Valentine was not a made up character because archaeologists have uncovered an ancient church that was dedicated to him.

The most famous Valentine was a Catholic priest in Rome who helped Christians who were being persecuted by Claudius II around 200 B.C. He was soon caught and thrown in prison. During his imprisonment, Valentine secretly married young couples against the law. (One legend says that he restored the sight of the jailer’s daughter and, the day before he was executed, wrote a farewell note to the daughter signed, “from your Valentine”) Finally, on February 14th 269, St. Valentine was beaten with clubs then executed. That date later became his feast day; what we know as Valentine’s Day!

St. Valentine, the patron saint of engaged couples, happy marriages, lovers, travelers and young people, pray for us!

Upward Towards the Tip of the Mount

Upward toward the tip of the mount,
He bumped and struggled; tripped and staggered,
But onward and onward; worn and haggard.
Upward toward the tip of the mount,
The wind, like wolves, it howled and rushed,
But harder and harder; beat and pushed.
Upward toward the tip of the mount,
Joined by others who walked in his path,
But shoving them off; mean and wrath.
Upward toward the tip of the mount,
Snow came down in blankets and sheets,
But deeper and deeper; cold fingers and feet.
Upward toward the tip of the mount,
Someone called; pleading, imploring,
But climbing and climbing; ignoring, ignoring.
At last, at long last, the tip of the mount!
At the tip in the clouds, joyously shout.
He skipped and he laughed but they thundered and rumbled,
They let out a zap and down the man tumbled.
He whimpers and weeps at the base like before,
For he had struggled and climbed but shoved and ingnored.

Recipe: Raspberry Valentine Cookies

We love to make these for Valentine's day every year!

Depending on the size of your cookies, this recipe makes about 1 1/2 dozen.
1 cup butter, softened
2/3 cup sugar
2 egg yolks
2 1/2 cups flour
raspberry jam (seedless, otherwise must be strained)
powdered sugar

Cream butter and sugar together.
Add egg yolks, mix well.
Add flour and salt, beating well.
Form into a ball, and chill (I've skipped the chill part before and not had bad results. I think it just makes the cookies flaky).
Roll dough out to 1/8-1/4 inch thickness.
Use a doughnut cutter or two cookie cutters, one large and one small to cut shapes.
You'll need the same amount of solid shapes (bottoms) as shapes with the centers missing (tops).
These cookies tend to stick so it's good to bake on parchment paper if you have it, otherwise lightly grease your cookie sheet.
Bake in a 375 degree oven for 8-10 mins.
Move the cookies to a wire rack to cool.
Once cooled, sprinkle the tops (pieces with missing centers) with powdered sugar (I use a wire mesh strainer).
Spread the bottoms (solid cookies) with a thin layer of raspberry jam (sometimes we use chocolate pread instead!).
Place the tops sugar side up on top of the raspberry filling. Yum!
